The John Muir Association supports the National Park Service in sustaining the John Muir National Historic Site a center for education, inspiration, and advocacy of the legacy of John Muir. In keeping with this mission, each year since 1978, the John Muir Association has honored those who continue John Muir's legacy of environmental preservation. The John Muir Association will present the 46th John Muir Conservation Awards in each of the four categories listed below.

The John Muir Association invites you to nominate a deserving individual, nonprofit organization, business, public agency or educational institution for recognition. Self nominations are accepted. Submissions are due February 1, 2025.

Award Categories

• Conservationist of the Year: For an individual(s) who has excelled in environmental protection, or made significant contributions to the advancement of conservation.
• Environmental Education Conservation Award: For outstanding contribution by an individual(s) (professional or volunteer), business, organization or public agency to environmental education, whether in a classroom or otherwise.
• Educational Institution: For outstanding achievement by a organization or individual that promotes or provides education on environmental protection or conservation.
• Nonprofit Organization: For outstanding achievement by a nonprofit organization that promotes environmental protection, or demonstrated significant achievement or leadership in the advancement of environmental protection or conservation.
• Local, State, or Federal Government Conservation Award: For outstanding achievement by a public agency that promotes environmental protection, or demonstrated significant achievement or leadership in the advancement of environmental protection or conservation.
• Business Conservation Award: For outstanding achievement by a business (other than a nonprofit organization) that promotes environmental protection, or demonstrated significant achievement or leadership in the advancement of environmental protection or conservation.

• Local, state, and federal governmental agencies
• Corporations and other business entities (that are not nonprofit organizations)

Eligible Conservation Activities

• Environmental Action: A significant contribution toward encouraging a sustainable environment, reducing pollution, wildlife protection or similar activities.
• Environmental Education/Advocacy: A significant contribution toward environmental education through programs, activities or other forums, which may include increasing public awareness of environmental issues, urban enhancement, resource preservation, or habitat restoration.
• Resource Preservation: A significant contribution toward the protection and preservation of natural, cultural, or historical resources.
• Improving Urban Areas: A significant contribution to the improvement of the urban environment (for example, planting trees, upgrading or establishing urban parks, or improving access to open space).
• Habitat Restoration: A significant contribution to wildlife habitat restoration and enhancement (for example, watershed or wetland restoration, re-introduction of native species, planting native trees and/or shrubs for forage or cover, or re-forestation projects).
• Other: A significant contribution to restoration, protection, conservation, or natural resources not previously described.

Award Selection and Presentation

The John Muir Conservation Awards are presented annually. A panel will review the nominations and select a recipient for each of the John Muir Conservation Award categories. An award may not be given in a category, however, if the panel judges that no applicant meets the standards in that category.

The John Muir Conservation Awards will be presented at the John Muir Birthday–Earth Day Celebration to be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at the John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez, California. Conservation Award recipients will be notified in advance of the award presentation.
